Heading for the Hills

A couple of weeks ago, Rainbow Shoes, The Girl, her friend Moo and I needed a break from 100+ degree weather, so we headed for the mountain nearby.  The drive only takes about 45 minutes, but it feels like a whole other world up there.  We couldn’t have asked for better weather.  It was in the upper 70’s, sunny, and breezy.  I love the sound of the wind through the trees–it soothes the soul.  The kids took a little hike and skipped rocks on the lake, and then we drove further up the mountain for homemade pizza.

Me and The Girl

It was such a nice trip for us.  The Girl made me promise  we’ll go at least once a month.  I’m so proud that my kids can enjoy a simple, relaxing day.  So often they’re in front of the computer or plugged in to Ipods, but they can also occasionally slow down and enjoy just being together.

Flying the Coop

My nest got a little emptier last week, when Numbah One Son moved about 90 miles away.   Since he moved out when he turned 18, I’m not as shell-shocked as I could be.  But until a week ago, he was no more than 10 miles from home, and I saw him once a week when he stopped in to do laundry and hang out with us.  What a change this will be.  I’m trying to buck up and not worry.  Well, not too much, anyway.

I can’t believe how grown up he is.  When he turned 18, I had such a hard time wrapping my brain around the fact that my baby boy, who surely I was rocking to sleep only days ago, had turned into such a handsome young man.  I finally understand what it means to marvel at how quickly they grow up.  I am at the same time nostalgic for that little boy, and so proud of the man he is becoming.  Oh, and I’m so glad he only moved 90 miles away instead of 900!

School’s Out

Actually, it’s been out since May 22. Unfortunately, I was also out–of commission, that is. I evidently came down with a stomach bug that I couldn’t shake. Between kids getting out of school, graduation parties to attend, getting The Girl ready to go to Disneyland with a bus load of middle-schoolers, and working full-time to boot, things would have been hectic without what my former father-in-law so eloquently called the “urpie-poopies”. I managed to not miss work, but didn’t have energy for anything but the bare minimum for a couple of weeks. I rested last weekend, and seem, after almost 3 weeks of yuck, to be well. I hope.

More to come in the next day or two.
